When Does Weed Season Open?

Testimonials_Header

Take advantage with products that drive early spring shopper traffic

When spring weather warms the top layer of soil to 55° F weed scientists know that conditions are right for two things to happen: forsythias reach full bloom and crabgrass seeds begin their germination season.

Thus for gardeners-in-the-know, yellow buds on forsythia branches are a call to action: it’s time to apply a pre-emergent garden weed preventer to stop the seeds of early-sprouting weeds like crabgrass, chickweed and others before forsythias reach full bloom.

But the beginning of germination season is just that, the beginning. Different weeds’ seeds germinate at different times all season long, spring through fall.  Early prevention is optimal, but anytime can be an effective time to begin a weed prevention routine.

For gardeners wishing to minimize hours lost to weeding, here are some tips for getting ahead, and staying ahead, of troublesome garden weeds.

1. Get rid of existing weeds
Mulch and pre-emergent weed preventers don’t kill weeds. They prevent weed seeds from sprouting. So, first, any existing weeds must be removed. Manual weeding is the safest and surest method. It’s especially important to remove weeds, roots and all. And definitely don’t ever let them gain size and go to seed!

2. Add mulch as a first line of defense
Mulch is an important and effective weed-fighting tool. Mulch deprives weed seeds from the light they need to sprout. A two to three inch layer of mulch goes a long way toward preventing garden weeds.

3. Prevent new weeds from starting
Using a pre-emergent weed preventer such as Preen combined with mulch offers a one-two punch against weeds. Just sprinkle the granules on top of the mulch. Together they can stop weeds for up to three to four months, working on seeds in the top layer of soil or mulch, plus those carried in by the wind, birds or animals. An additional application in mid-summer will protect against late summer- and fall-sprouting weed seeds.

4. Activate the weed-control barrier
After applying a garden weed preventer, water with a hose or sprinkler to activate it. Once activated, a product like Preen bonds with the soil, creating an invisible weed-control barrier that stops seeds from rooting by interrupting cell replication in their initial root hairs. It won’t build up in the soil, wash away or leach into ground water.  Within six months to a year or so the active ingredient is broken down by soil microbes and is no longer active.

Preen, the leader in garden weed preventers, recently rolled out its innovative new Battery-Powered Spreader applicator cap as an option on Preen Garden Weed Preventer and Preen Southern Weed Preventer. The new powered spreader makes it even easier to apply Preen’s pre-emergent granules with consistent, even coverage for maximum garden weed prevention.

Gardeners who tried the battery-powered applicator found it comfortable to use, providing a steady, even application rate. Users could quickly cover large areas, while also readily directing the flow into hard to reach places such as under shrubs and between plants.  The new powered spreader reduced fatigue and earned high marks in consumer research.

Preen Garden Weed Preventer with the regular shake-top applicator cap is offered in bottles with 5.625 lbs. of product (G81 2463795), estimated to cover 900 square feet, with a Suggested Retail Price of $17.99. The new Preen Garden Weed Preventer with the Power Spreader applicator cap is offered in a bonus size with 6.25 lbs. of product (G81 2464415), estimated to cover 1,000 square feet, with a Suggested Retail Price of $22.99.

Following a simple weed prevention routine makes it possible to minimize many weed problems before they ever happen.

Your Grass Is Hungry — Feed it!

Testimonials_HeaderAll grass really wants is a nutritious meal. Plants need regular feeding, just as humans do, to grow and develop. Feeding your grass 3 to 4 meals per season will help keep it soft and bare-footable for a picnic under the stars or a game of flag football with your family.

Why is feeding grass so important?
Just as we require nutritious food, so does your lawn. Simply put; grass needs nourishment. Regardless of the region or grass-type, lawns grow stronger, more resilient and greener when fed. Even if your grass looks great now, maintaining nutrition is important for continued success. Both your grass and you benefit from feeding – and that continues year after year.

  • Less water needed. A well-fed lawn generally requires less water than an unfed lawn because roots are more developed, improving grass’s ability to absorb water and nutrients.
  • Cleans the air. A well-fed lawn removes twice the amount of carbon from the air in one year than a tree in 10 years.
  • Helps crowd out weeds.  A well-fed lawn contributes to a deeper, denser and stronger root system that can better crowd out weeds.
  • It makes economic sense. A well cared-for lawn not only looks good, but can also increase home value by up to 11% on average and provides your family with the softest play space for outdoor games of ‘catch’ and ‘tag’. Investing in your yard now can help avoid costly problems later.

Which food would my lawn like?

Grass benefits from a food specifically designed for lawns – especially when fed a slow-release lawn food with no fillers, like Scotts® Natural Lawn Food (S09 47503) or Scotts® Turf Builder® Lawn Food (S09 2006, S09 2016). You want your family to eat nourishing meals with no fillers, so treat your lawn to quality meals as well. Your grass will appreciate any kind of food as long as it gets a balanced diet of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium—be sure to check the N-P-K numbers on the bag and ensure you are giving your lawn the right amount of each. Nitrogen helps ensure green foliage, phosphorus contributes to strong root growth, and potassium aids in turfrgrass hardiness and wear tolerance. All purpose fertilizers (10-10-10) can give established grass more phosphorus than it needs. Instead, look for low-P or ‘P-free’ lawn foods with N-P-K numbers more like 11-2-2 or 32-0-4.

How much lawn food will my grass need?
The easiest way to estimate the number of bags your lawn needs is by lawn size: home owners with an average subdivision lot will need to buy two 5,000 sq. ft. (small) bags and a 1 acre country lot will require three 15,000 sq. ft. (large) bags. Remember to set your spreader to the recommended setting listed in the directions on the back panel of the bag. Leftover food can be stored for your grass’ next meal.

When should I feed my lawn?
Lawns will benefit from feeding in any season, so don’t worry too much about timing—just feed it. Ideally, grass should be fed 2-4 times per year divided between spring, early summer, and fall so think of it like serving meals. In the spring, when grass is waking up from the dormancy of winter, feed it breakfast. In the summer, when your grass may be getting a bit worn out, feed it lunch. In the fall, just before the long winter’s rest, feed your grass a nice dinner to keep it nourished. If you miss a feeding, do not stress—just feed when you can.

How do I apply the food?
For nice even coverage, use a quality spreader, following package directions and spreader setting recommendations to apply any lawn care product. Simply set the spreader to the application setting recommended on the bag and in a few minutes your grass will be getting the nutrients it needs. For ease of application, try Scotts® EdgeGuard® DLX Broadcast Spreader (S09 76232). This spreader is easy to use and prevents product from being thrown onto landscaping, driveways, and sidewalks. When purchasing a spreader, remember that Scotts is the only lawn care company that manufactures lawn food and spreaders designed specifically to work together ensuring even distribution.

Where can I purchase these products?
Any nursery or hardware store will carry a selection of lawn care product, but don’t get overwhelmed. Cheaper bags of lawn food aren’t necessarily a better deal, many contain up to 40 percent fillers like sawdust, sand and gravel. Be sure to read the label before purchasing any lawn food. Check for unnecessary fillers and the correct square footage to ensure the highest quality and best dollar value.

Keep Customers Coming Back with Clauss AirShoc Lawn & Garden Tools

Testimonials_HeaderSharp cutting edges are the key to successful gardening. Keeping a sharp edge is sometimes difficult and most gardeners lack knowledge when it comes to proper sharpening technique. Improper sharpening can actually ruin the cutting edge. Even trained sharpeners find it difficult to sharpen the curved blade of a lopper or pruner with precision. So why bother sharpening at all?

With Clauss AirShoc tools, blades never need to be re-sharpened! AirShoc tools feature a replaceable blade system, but what’s truly unique is how quick and easy the replacement process can be. The simple D-ring system allows you to change the blades without the use of any tools. In seconds, you can have a fresh blade and get back to cutting. Even better, AirShoc pruners not only have replaceable blades but the blade types are interchangeable. One tool can quickly change from a bypass to a snip or an anvil pruner.

Replaceable blades aren’t the only thing to brag about when it comes to AirShoc. The tools feature the latest breakthrough in cutting performance from Clauss with Titanium Bonded® Non-Stick blades. This new bonding combines Titanium with a non-stick formula and creates a blade that is highly resistant to adhesives, including sap! This is a durable micro ceramic coating that will not wear off – up to 100,000 cuts. The result is a blade that is 5x harder than an untreated stainless steel blade, so it will stay sharper for a longer period of time. With AirShoc, your blade stays sharp longer but when it does finally dull, simply replace the blade and keep on cutting.

The AirShoc line was initially introduced with a petite and a large pruner, a lopper, hedge shear, grass shear, garden shear and a branch saw, along with all of the coordinating replacement blades. Recent additions to the assortment include a machete, a telescopic pruner/saw that extends to 12 ft., a dual action pruner and lopper, both of which will quickly switch from anvil to ratchet cutting action. The newest tools feature all of the bells and whistles of the original line, which of course includes the replaceable blade system and the Titanium Non-Stick blades, but that’s not all. All AirShoc tools also have Microban® product protection. Microban helps to inhibit the growth of bacterial odors and is featured on AirShoc handles to help protect the user and on tool blades to help ensure a healthier cut for the plant. This protection is not a coating but an additive that penetrates the product materials and lasts for the life of the tool.

The name AirShoc actually refers to the impact resistant grips on all tools. Designed to reduce fatigue and increase ergonomics and overall comfort, the grips are also bright green in color to decrease risk of loss in grass, foliage, plant clippings and garden beds. This feature-rich line was developed by Clauss as a result of years of focus group and user based research. Working hard to identify unmet needs of professional gardeners and landscapers, Clauss has built an assortment of tools that are truly innovative. It’s not just about the big stuff – blade changing and sap resistance; it’s also about the little things. Things like integrated wire cutters, blade sharpness and branch size indicators. That’s right…a notch in the AirShoc pruner handles lets you know if a branch is too big for the tool to cut. If the branch fits in the notch but the pruner won’t cut it, this is an indication that your blades need to be replaced or that a larger tool should be used for the cut. At Clauss, it’s about innovation, technology and tools that will withstand the toughest tasks and keep on cutting.

AirShoc tools, like all Clauss tools, come with a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in workmanship and are packaged using recycled and recyclable materials so they are environmentally friendly. With AirShoc, you can keep the customer coming back for consumable blade purchases and to find the next tool that suits their newest cutting need. It’s all about staying sharp!
