GrowOya — Simple, High-Efficiency Watering The Traditional Way

It’s so often true that all that’s old is new again. In times like these—new gardeners abound, everyone as busy as can be, and watering gardens often neglected—it makes sense to look back to traditional ways of doing things to uncover forgotten technologies that make sense for current conditions.

In the case of localized irrigation systems, there is a traditional technology that is making a serious comeback, and for good reason. Clay pot irrigation (also known as Oyas or ollas) has been re-discovered as a super easy, extremely high-efficiency watering system for home gardeners. The inherent ease of watering your garden it provides—water far less often and with less need for specific watering knowledge—and a water savings of up to 70% over common surface irrigation makes for plenty of good reason why we’re seeing more clay pot irrigation in gardens.

What is Clay Pot Irrigation?

Clay pot irrigation is a traditional form of localized irrigaton where a clay pot is buried among your plants, with the neck sticking just above the soil, and filled with water every few days. The planted clay pot (called an Oya or olla) is made of unglazed porous clay, allowing the water to slowly, efficiently seep out of the pot. Plant roots instinctively grow toward the water source and connect directly with the Oya, which allows them to take exactly the water they need when they need it, no more no less. Providing a highly efficient form of watering that is easier for gardeners and much better for plants.

The Oya has been used in agriculture-focused cultures dating back thousands of years. Spanish settlers brought Oyas to the Americas during colonial times (which is the derivation of the name olla). Clay pot irrigation is even detailed in the Chinese Fan Sheng-chih Shu (the first agricultural extension book) published more than 2000 years ago.

Oyas are the perfect solution for the growing crop of newbie gardeners—they take the guesswork out of when and how much to water your garden. Fill the Oyas every few days and the plants take care of the rest themselves. They are also the perfect tool for busy gardeners who can’t get to their gardens daily or who want to take advantage of the bright days to get away on vacation. And of course Oyas save a ton of water—considerably more than drip irrigation and far better than conventional surface irrigation—so you’re doing the right thing for the environment.

Three different sizes of Oyas are available on the market to water different garden configurations. There are small Oyas (1 litre capacity) sized for planting in a half barrel or large patio pot, medium Oyas (3 litre capacity) that will water a 3-foot planter box, and large Oyas (6.5 litre capacity) for the bigger boxes or your 4-foot raised bed.

Oyas now available through Arett

Recognizing the problem-solving features of Oyas for today’s market, Arett has added Oyas to the warehouses in 2017. GrowOya is the leading company in the Oya revival, offering a product that combines traditional technology with advancements in clay production techniques. Packaged and presented with the growing segment of new gardeners in mind, GrowOya is making a traditional technology relevant to a new market.

One Product to Reduce Watering, Promote Rooting, & Boost Microbiology

One Product to Reduce Watering, Promote Rooting, & Boost Microbiology

Too good to be true or the next best thing since sliced bread!? Here’s why NutriRoot™ is the next best thing.

What is NutriRoot?

NutriRoot 2-2-3 Liquid Soil Applied Fertilizer is a unique blend of nutrients, seaweed extract, humic acid, surfactants, and humectants designed to accelerate root development and to reduce water stress in new plantings, mature trees, shrubs, and lawns.

The NutriRoot Difference

Unlike most products currently available on the market that are purely nutrient based or standalone water managers, NutriRoot combines these and more into one easy, effective treatment. It enables soil to extract water from the air into the root zone, reducing watering while supporting microbiology and stimulating root growth, resulting in successful plantings even in stressed conditions.

For water management, NutriRoot is not a wetting agent, which affects the surface tension of water, or a water absorbing polymer, which can disturb the soil surface. NutriRoot uses patented, food-grade, soil-specific humectants. These humectants will attract water vapor from the atmosphere and condense it to liquid form, making it root available. Using NutriRoot is an easy way to reduce overall water usage by helping plants more efficiently use the water they receive.

NutriRoot includes a non-ionic surfactant to help move the product to the root zone, while increasing percolation during watering events. Humic substances and kelp are known as bio-stimulants, which promote root growth and enrich soil when broken down by soil microbes. Lastly, NutriRoot contains both macro and micro nutrients, such as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, and zinc. A U.S.D.A.-certified biobased product, NutriRoot uses 86% renewable carbon content, an impressive 15% above the minimum requirement. This label assures consumers that the product contains a verified amount of renewable biological ingredients.

Using NutriRoot

NutriRoot can be a tool that both you and your customers can use to reduce water stress and transplant shock. Apply directly to the soil in containerized plants or spray the base of balled/burlapped plants to ensure your watering is more efficient. Drench soil with NutriRoot before and after transplanting to help with root establishment. Existing landscape applications can be made before bud break, monthly during the growing season (particularly during hot, dry months), and after leaves have dropped in the fall. Treatments in northern areas before the ground temperatures drop below 40 degrees F help to decrease plant stress during winter. The basic dilution is 1.25-1.5 fl. oz. NutriRoot in 1 gallon of water. Use higher rates for newly transplanted trees or trees with root loss. Use lower rates for routine maintenance and to alleviate drought stress.

NutriRoot can be used in conjunction with standard fertilization programs and may increase their efficacy. Applying with amendments, like biochar and compost, can help increase the soil’s water holding capacity.

Reduce Watering, Reduce Plant Loss, Increase Profits!

NutriRoot makes watering more efficient, reduces plant stress, and increases water storage in landscaped and containerized plants. Worry less about your customer’s success while maintaining profit. Offer NutriRoot as an add-on sale to reduce returns or as a solution to protecting treasured trees and plants. With the new NutriRoot display you can provide a variety of sizes without taking up valuable floor space. Available in 8 fl. oz., 32 fl. oz., 1 gallon, and 32 fl. oz. hose end sprayer concentrates. 32 fl. oz. makes up to 25 gallons, treating up to 25 small trees.

DRAMM Celebrating 75 Years of Design and Manufacturing of Quality Watering Tools

Arett Outlook March 2016

Dramm Corporation has been a leader in watering tools and accessories for 75 years. Imagine it all started with a man named John G. Dramm and his invention that revolutionized the way greenhouses; nurseries and gardeners water their plants.

In 1941, John G. Dramm produced cut flowers for his florist shop in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Johnny, as everyone knew him, always had a passion and a gift for invention. In order to water greenhouse crops quickly, Johnny saw the need for a nozzle to apply very large quantities of water in a soft stream. Thus, he designed the 400 Water Breaker, which applied water with no damage to plants. This nozzle is the standard of commercial growers worldwide.

The company developed from a “basement operation” to a 70,000 sq. ft. facility, employing over 50 people.

News quickly spread about this innovative watering tool and requests for the new nozzle were received. Johnny continued to work in his floral shop during the day and constructed the 400 Water Breaker® orders at night. As the business began expanding, tragedy struck. John G. Dramm passed away suddenly in 1951 at age 47. He was survived by his wife, Perdita, and two sons ages 12 and 18.

His family had no Social Security benefits and now struggled to keep the business going. Subcontracting the parts and assembly, Perdita packed the orders, attended to all of the paperwork and, using her lunch hours while she worked as a school librarian, drove to the post office and mailed out the shipments. Taking no salary from the Dramm Company, Perdita used the modest profits to put her two sons through college.

After the two boys went to college they continued the tradition of contributing to the growth of the family business. By the late 1950s and into the early 1960s, John Peter, the older son, started working out of his own basement. He eventually rented a small factory and gave it the name Dramm Manufacturing Company. Like his father, he had a natural interest and talent for invention. He evolved into a self-taught engineer, designing specialized equipment for Dramm products.

In 1967, younger brother Kurt William, the born salesman of the family, purchased The Dramm Company from his mother, Perdita. Although there were two companies, being a close family, they operated as one entity. In 1978, at an early age of 45, John P. Dramm passed away and the two companies became one under the name Dramm Corporation.

While the original products were designed for the professionals working in greenhouses and nurseries, requests from the public were building. The avid home gardener wanted to use the same watering tools the “pros” were using. And the “pros” were all using Dramm.

The company continued to grow in the retail industry by expanding into a full line of Rain Wands, sprinklers, and watering tools accessories. In the 1990’s, Dramm Corporation revolutionized watering tools by introducing color into the full line of Rain Wands, sprinklers, and watering tools with six rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and berry. Now gardeners could choose a color to fit each individual’s personality and it would not get lost in the lawn. Since then, competitors have often copied but have never matched the complete style, color, and quality of Dramm’s products.

In July of 2013, Kurt and Marlene Dramm announced the completed ownership transfer to the their son Hans Dramm and daughter Heidi Dramm Becker. Hans Dramm is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Heidi Dramm Becker is Executive Vice President and appears in many of Dramm’s TV commercials and lifestyle photos.

Family involvement has been an integral part of the growth and success of the company and is still a vital ingredient today. Hans Dramm’s daughter and Heidi Dramm Becker’s children also appear in TV commercials and lifestyle photos. Kurt Becker, son-in-law, is the Executive Vice President and the Director or Commercial Sales and Marketing. Kurt Dramm is still active with the company as the Chairman Emeritus.

Today, Dramm continues to provide quality, durable, and professional watering tools, accessories, and natural fertilizers to nurseries, greenhouses, and avid gardeners nationwide. Dramm strives to produce products that save time and energy while providing quality products that will last a lifetime.

Simple Watering Tips for a Healthy Lawn and Garden with the Gilmour EZ Hose

outlook_g58_headerUsing a hose for daily irrigation seems simple, but without the proper watering set up, your efforts could be futile.

Below tips from the watering experts at Gilmour can increase efficiency and bring you one step closer to creating a yard with envious curb appeal. Give your greens a thorough soaking once in a while to produce extended and robust roots.

1. Use Gilmour EZ Hose to water in the morning, when the air is cool and moist. The warmth of the sun and the rising temperature gently dry the grass and the leaves on the plants. Since morning air is damp, you don’t waste water through evaporation. Additionally, EZ Hose is ideal for watering in hard to reach places, such as between shrubs or overhead flower baskets. It is 40% lighter than traditional garden hoses, which helps to avoid hand fatigue.

2. Follow a regular watering schedule to discourage bugs by providing them with an inhospitable environment. Insects, with the possible exception of the water bug, aren’t terribly fond of water. The Gilmour EZ Hose works with sprinklers, water timers, nozzles or alone to fill your watering can. This hose won’t recoil when water pressure drops.

3. To be certain your lawn is hydrated adequately when it has failed to rain, the standard rule of thumb is to sprinkle one inch of water per week. Using EZ Hose makes this task easy. While most lightweight hoses deliver 4 – 6 gallons of water per minute, the Gilmour EZ Hose provides 12 – 14 gallons.

About Gilmour EZ Hose
Gilmour EZ Hose offers a reliable solution to consumers’ demand for a lightweight garden hose that is convenient, durable, and versatile. EZ hose is 40% lighter than an average garden hose, making watering and cleaning tasks a breeze. It is constructed from a durable UV-resistant PVC liner, which allows consumers to use the hose during hot summer days. The outer cover is a heavy-duty fabric that resists daily scuffs. EZ hose works with or without a watering tool attachment.

Let the Gilmour EZ Hose drive sales for your retail location. In 2013 the lightweight hose business was estimated to be worth $300M. Don’t let other retailers enjoy all the profits. Get in the game and win with Gilmour EZ hose.

Get Ready For Watering Season!

outlook_K01b_bannerIndustry sources* are reporting an increase in gardening participation. Lawn care is traditionally the largest activity, but vegetable gardening is increasing to the point that over half of households surveyed reported growing vegetables. This is good news for the industry as so many areas endured an especially rough winter, and consumers are anxious to get out and bring the life back into their outdoor spaces.

Water and healthy soil both play key parts in creating a successful lawn or garden. Effective watering and sprinkler selection should start with some questions like what is being watered, how often will the area be watered, and what kind of soil. Another consideration to the watering decision process can be planting plants with similar requirements together so wet and dry zones are more manageable.

Sprinkler Selection

Oscillating sprinklers have long been a consumer favorite because of their ease of use. They are also excellent for newly seeded lawns due to their gentler, more rain-like spray. They come sized for medium to larger lawns and offer a variety of adjustments. Like all sprinklers, the attainable coverage is based on water pressure. The average water pressure in many communities ranges from 40 to 60 PSI.

outlook_K01b_body1Oscillating sprinklers are a consumer favorite.

Impulse sprinklers got their start in agriculture, and are available in many sizes and still used today. Consumers can enjoy units scaled for residential use that can cover large yard areas. Typical adjustments include full or part circle, distance control and a diffuser screw that can break up the stream for a less powerful spray. Available in metal and polymer with both sled and spike bases, impulse sprinklers are almost as popular as oscillating sprinklers. With heavy clay soil, a unit with a sled based will be much simpler to use.

Small area sprinklers allow for targeted watering, ideal for a garden with wet/dry zones. Most provide a single pattern that can be selected to match the area to be watered. Another option is a turret sprinkler with a large pattern dial than may offer as many as 9 different choices.

Whichever sprinkler is selected, encourage customers to water early in the day so the water can be used by the plants during the day and early enough not to burn the plants as the water dries.

All About Nozzles

One of the garden’s great multi-taskers, the nozzle can go from watering flowers to washing a car in an instant. Offer an assortment of features and sizes, as not all nozzles fit all hands comfortably. Dial nozzles with multiple patterns offer the maximum versatility, but standard pistol grips and the brass twist nozzles have been best sellers for years. Be sure to add some of the newer designs with the large thumb control – very easy for older hands and smaller hands to use. There will also be some customers who may need a specialized nozzle for a particular application such as hot water.

outlook_K01b_body2Be sure to stock thumb control nozzles, which are easier for older and smaller hands.

Don’t Forget the Accessories

Accessories can do so many things to bring added convenience and performance to other watering products. Products like quick connectors make changing watering tools so much faster and easier. Flow controls can be a single, double or even quadruple connector, available in poly, zinc or brass. There are also those called “full flow” that do not restrict water and offer larger knobs that can be gripped comfortably, even when wearing gloves.

Hose repair is another important part of watering. The Kinex clamshell style repair in both zinc/brass and poly offers larger clamps and longer, stainless steel screws, much better suited to secure repairs on premium hoses with larger diameters.

SLT – Kinex watering is a proud partner of Arett Sales.  Their goal is to offer quality, value and innovation to support and grow a successful watering program!
