Jack’s Launches Two New Must-Have Products

Arett Outlook March 2016

Home gardeners measure success through senses and emotions, happy when their plants are growing well and problem-free. They enjoy looking at gardens full of colorful blooms. They love cooking delicious meals of freshly picked vegetables. They feel great when a neighbor compliments them on their plants. The easier to grow, the more problem-free the plant, the more vivid the colors, the tastier the flavors, or the more aromatic the fragrance, the happier your customers will be. Jack’s Classic formulations are designed to make plants easier to grow, and simply grow better.

Loyal customers are the key to a successful garden retail business. The simplest way to ensure loyalty is to help them grow plants successfully. The folks at Jack’s have developed two new products to help your customers achieve great gardens. Jack’s Exact Mix Sprayer is made for applying Jack’s Classic to large areas, and the Jack’s Classic Tomato FeED enhanced with Calcium and Magnesium.

The Jack’s Exact Mix Sprayer was designed for plant and garden lovers and is made specifically for the application of Jack’s Classic Water Soluble fertilizers. You can use all of the Jack’s Classic Formulas in the sprayer except the Hydrangea Blue and Classicote with Crystal Green. Jack’s Classic Water Soluble fertilizers are completely soluble, which allows them to be applied accurately using the 3 EXACT settings on the sprayer. Full Strength is used for flower and vegetable gardens, hanging baskets, containers, and bedding plants at a 1 tablespoon per gallon rate of application (every 7-14 days). Half Strength is used for perennials and low feeding annuals, like new guinea impatiens at a 1/2 tablespoon per gallon rate. Quarter strength is for feeding plants everyday (Constant Feed).

Jack’s Exact Mix Sprayer is easy to use and comfortable to hold while you spray and feed. Fill the sprayer with 6 ounces or 12 tablespoons of Jack’s Classic, add water to the fill line (36 ounces), attach the sprayer to the bottle, and choose your setting.

Jack’s Classic Tomato FeED 12-15-30 is formulated for vigorous plant growth from roots to green foliage, abundant flowering, and fruit set for all tomato varieties, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, squash, and zucchini. Tomato FeED contains a micronutrient package and magnesium for improved feeding results under diverse soil and growing conditions. It also includes calcium, an effective nutrient to help prevent blossom end rot. This new formulation can be used in place of Jack’s Classic All Purpose 20-20-20 and can be used in conjunction with Jack’s Blossom Booster. It is recommended to feed at the 1 tablespoon per gallon rate every 10-14 days.

To Rid Your Garden of Weeds, Focus on the Seeds

Arett Outlook March 2016

Every garden is filled with them: millions of unseen weeds. They are dormant seeds that lurk just below the soil surface, ready to spring to life with just the briefest exposure to light. Weeds can choke a garden, robbing it of space, nutrients, and water. Allowing weeds to mature compounds the problem, as they are naturally prolific seed producers. They grow aggressively and can be tough to get rid of, because pulling weeds brings more weed seeds to the surface.

The good news is that seeds can also be key to winning the war on garden weeds.

To break the weeding cycle, the experts at Preen suggest a strategic approach that stops weeds before they start, by preventing their seeds from germinating in the first place.

“If weeds don’t grow, you don’t have to pull them,” says Preen’s Maryanne Bayoumy. “For gardeners, a simple annual weed prevention routine can free up a lot of time.”

Start with a clean slate

Early spring is the ideal time to launch a weed prevention program, Bayoumy says. “But it’s never too late, or too early, to start. Different types of weeds germinate at different times throughout the growing season: spring, summer and fall.”

First, remove existing weeds to start with a clean slate. The old garden proverb that “one year’s seeds yield seven years’ weeds” is based on the ability of many mature weeds to produce tens of thousands of seeds – per plant, per season.

There are weed killers, but even dead weeds need to be removed if you don’t want unsightly brown patches in the garden. So you may find it cheaper and easier to simply remove existing weeds by hand.

Ironically, even the act of weeding can encourage new weeds to grow.

“Pulling weeds disturbs soil, exposing them to light and starting their growth cycle,” says Bayoumy. “The ability of weeds to thrive in disturbed environments — like gardens — is one of their most important survival skills.”

Mulch is the first line of defense

A three-inch layer of mulch helps block light that weed seeds need to grow, and it also helps retain moisture, keeps soil and plant roots cooler, adds organic matter and a nice tidy look to the garden. Popular mulches include shredded wood bark, cocoa hulls, and pine straw.

Stop weeds before they start

Mulch deals with weed seeds in the soil, but the mulch itself may contain seeds. For a “one-two punch” against sprouting seeds in the top layer of soil and mulch, apply Preen Weed Preventer on top of mulch. Once watered in to activate, the product bonds with soil particles, creating an invisible weed-control barrier that prevents weed seeds from forming roots for up to three to four months. After its effective period, Preen biodegrades and, because it bonds to the soil, it does not leach into groundwater.

The campaign continues

Sometimes unseen weeds will have already sprouted before you lay down mulch and weed preventer. As you see them, pull them out. Remember that weed seeds already in the soil are only part of the problem. Other weed seeds continue to arrive in the garden, day after day, borne on the wind or by birds and animals. Preen will stop most from sprouting, but a watchful eye and periodic spot action can help you stay ahead of any weedy interlopers.

As different weeds’ seeds germinate throughout the growing season, it’s good to refresh mulch and weed preventer as needed in mid-summer or early fall to keep the prevention barrier at full force. Next spring, restart your weed prevention routine. Following an annual anti-weed routine can result in considerably fewer weeds over time. And time is what it’s all about: no weeds means no time wasted weeding!

Sun Gro Potting Mixes – What’s in the Mix?

Arett Outlook March 2016

Sun Gro retail products are made with the highest quality ingredients in the same facilities that produce their professional grower mixes. Their many brands cover every gardening need – from general gardening to container-specific planting to specialty plants and plant foods. Whether your customer is a weekend gardener or a master gardener, he or she will all find products to suit their plants, projects, and lifestyle.

A growing mix supports the plant and holds water and nutrients for its growth. The following is a brief overview of various ingredients found in Sun Gro’s mixes.

Sphagnum Peat Moss is the non-living, fibrous material formed when Sphagnum moss decomposes. While peat moss is brown, like garden soil, it has a different texture and weight; it’s light and spongy and crumbles into small clumps. It is nature’s best all-purpose soil conditioner because of its remarkable ability to manage water efficiently and hold nutrients that may otherwise leach out. That is why Sun Gro adds Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss to all of their key potting mixes.

Bark increases air capacity. Its unique particle size and shape allows air to circulate through the soil, providing oxygen to the roots.

Perlite is crushed volcanic rock that is expanded or “popped” in a furnace. Perlite particles are roundish and white. This natural additive is used to aerate the media and aid in water retention.

Coconut Coir is a by-product of the coconut fiber industry. Coir is the “dust” produced during processing. It adds bulk and texture to mixes and can hold up to 9 times its weight in water.

Compost is organic material (such as bark, peanut or rice hulls) that has been processed and decomposed. Compost is used primarily to provide natural and stabilized organic matter to a growing mix. Compost has excellent water-holding ability and a particle size that helps with oxygen exchange.

Earthworm Castings provide a rich, natural fertilizer. Castings are the end-product of the decomposition of organic materials by earthworms. Earthworm castings are nutrient rich and biologically active, and enhance the ability of soil to retain water.

RESiLIENCE® – Silicon (Si) is a beneficial plant nutrient that when added to a growing medium can result in more vigorous plants. RESiLIENCE is Sun Gro’s brand name for patented growing mixes enriched with silicon. RESiLIENCE mixes enhance plant quality, resulting in thicker/stronger stems, compact growth, increased root mass, and extended resistance to wilt.

Controlled Release Fertilizer is added to select potting and container mixes and soil amendments to provide a modest amount of fertilizer for several months. The fertilizer is “coated” so the fertilizer releases over time.

Mycorrhizae is a group of fungi which form a mutually beneficial relationship with many plants. It grows inside a plant’s roots or on its surface. The fungi benefits from the plant’s nutrients and in turn send their hyphae (similar to small roots) into the surrounding soil to absorb nutrients and water. Sun Gro utilizes a proprietary 7-species blend which provides greater mycorrhizal establishment in a wider variety of plants.

Wetting Agents make potting mixes wet up evenly. This ensures good water distribution throughout the root zone throughout the growth of the plant. This is critical for mixes which contain components that naturally repel water, such as peat moss.

Organic products are ingredients that are carbon based, were once alive, and do not contain synthetic chemicals. Examples include peat moss, bark, organic fertilizers, and organic wetting agents

Natural Products are other components such as perlite, vermiculite, gypsum, limestone, and RESiLIENCE silicon. “Natural” means they are not carbon based but are obtained from natural deposits and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals. Vermiculite and perlite, for example, are ground up, screened, and expanded.

The major role of a growing mix is to support the plant, while holding water and nutrients for the plant to use during growth. Sun Gro is the largest supplier of professional growing media in North America. They also are the leading manufacturer of Canadian Sphagnum peat in North America.

They combine the best quality components to ensure their growing media creates outstanding results every time.

Encap® Flower Kits: Flower Gardening Made Easy

Arett Outlook February 2016

As winter gives way to spring, we’re all beginning to dream of the beautiful blooms we’ll color our yards with this year. And while some of us might have been blessed with a green thumb, others of us are not so lucky; we envy the gorgeous displays our neighbors cultivate, wondering where they find the time, or where they acquired such skill. This year, we can all have the floral displays we’re dreaming of, without having to become a master gardener in the process. All-In-One™ Flower Kits from Encap® make creating beautiful flower gardens easier than ever.

Encap® offers a full line of flower kits, each with vibrant, eye-catching packaging. These all-in-one kits contain everything needed to grow beautiful blooms that will last all season long, including seed, fertilizer, mulch, and Encap’s patented technologies to produce maximum results. With varieties to suit any gardener’s tastes, Encap® offers:

  • Pollinator Honey Bee Mix
  • Wildflower Aromatic Mix
  • Wildflower Bouquet Mix
  • Wildflower Butterfly & Hummingbird Mix
  • Wildflower Shady Mix
  • Daisy Mix
  • Zinnia Mix

While all flowers promote pollination, some flowers are a more attractive food source than others. Add to this the fact that different organisms and species have varying preferences, and it can be tough to know what types of flowers to cultivate in order to attract the pollinators you’re looking for. That’s why Encap® created the Pollinator Series, a collection of flower kits that are specifically designed to attract nature’s pollinators.

Pollinator Bird & Butterfly Mix

Pollinator Bird & Butterfly mix is specially formulated to attract birds and butterflies, promoting natural pollination, and offering a reliable food source for these popular garden visitors.

Pollinator Honey Bee Mix

The Honey Bee Mix is a special blend of flowers designed to attract and feed Honey Bees. This fosters local pollination and also provides a much-needed source of food for honeybees.

As homeowners look for more natural looking flower beds, wildflowers are becoming an increasingly popular option. Wildflowers provide vibrant floral displays, but give a less “manicured” feel. Hundreds of wildflower varieties exist, allowing for endless options in combinations. Encap® created a line of Wildflower kits for this reason, and has designed each kit with a specific purpose in mind.

Wildflower Aromatic Mix

Wildflower Aromatic Mix is a unique blend of wildflowers designed to not only provide colorful blooms, but also to give off a fragrant aroma.

Wildflower Butterfly & Hummingbird Mix

Wildflower Butterfly & Hummingbird Mix delivers beautiful displays that are formulated to attract both butterflies and hummingbirds.

Wildflower Bouquet Mix

Wildflower Bouquet Mix is a blend of flowers designed to provide just the right cuttings to create stunning bouquets.

Wildflower Shady Mix

Wildflower Shady Mix is a blend of wildflowers that grow best in shade. From Forget-Me-Nots to Sweet William Pinks, even those hard to grow shady spots around your yard can boast abundant flowerbeds.

Daisy Mix

The assortment found in Encap’s Daisy Mix provides varying heights and colors of daisies, creating a spectacular display of this classic favorite.

Zinnia Mix

Encap® also offers a Zinnia Mix. Zinnias have always been a popular choice among gardeners, because they are easy to grow, and offer a wide range of vibrant colors.

An Easier Way to Beautiful Blooms

Encap® Flower Kits not only look great, but they make gardening easier than ever, even for those of us who are inexperienced gardeners. Patented technologies help to maximize results while minimizing work:

Advanced Soil Technology™ (AST®)

Encap’s Advanced Soil Technology™ is a proprietary product that has revolutionized the way we garden. This patented technology improves the soil environment, enhances seed establishment, reduces nutrient loss, and maximizes water filtration. It works by bonding with the soil upon contact, to get into the root zone where it’s needed most.

Seed Watering Technology™ (SWT®)

Encap’s Seed Watering Technology™ takes the guesswork out of watering. This patented technology sparkles on the soil surface when wet, and gets dull when dry; gone are the days of over- and under-watering.

Encap® Flower Kits are easy to use: simply remove dead grass and debris from the planting area, spread the contents of the kit, water, and wait.

This year, there’s no need to stress over flower gardening; get All-In-One™ Flower Kits from Encap®!

Why Use Soilless Mixes?

outlook_c13_bannerWhile the soil in your garden may look great and may even produce some healthy plants, it’s most likely not your best option for starting plants or growing things in containers. Ideally you want to use a soilless media, such as Organic Seed Starting Jiffy-Mix. Soilless mixes provide several advantages over soil and will give a developing plant the boost it needs.

Jiffy seed starting mixes are distinguished by a balanced water/air ratio. Planted seedlings have fine roots that can easily penetrate through the starter mix without difficulty. This allows faster and stronger growth resulting in higher yields. Jiffy provides a superior consistent mix with finely tuned fiber lengths, water holding capacity, physical structure, and nutrient charge. The uniform, consistent blends assure potting and planting success year after year.
So what makes up the mix? Most mixes are made up predominantly of sphagnum peat moss. Sphagnum peat is lightweight and, in certain areas, renewable. Additionally, it drains well, yet is water retentive, like a sponge. It also will not crust and is weed free.
A further attribute of peat is its acidic side. Most seed starting mixes have a soil pH around 5.8, which is fine for starting most seeds. Jiffy mixes are designed for the special pH and nutrient needs of today’s new seed and plant varieties.
There are several other components traditionally added to mixes including:

  • Bark: Bark is added to improve drainage and air space within the mix. This means it will also decrease the water retention slightly. Bark mixes are better for use with mature plants that need to dry between waterings than for starting seeds.
  • Coir: Coir is a coconut fiber by-product and works similar to peat in providing good drainage while also retaining water. It’s often used as a substitute in areas where peat is hard to come by. Soils for containers need to be well aerated and well drained while still being able to retain enough moisture for plant growth.
  • Perlite: Perlite is that stuff that looks like “pebbly” Styrofoam. It’s a volcanic mineral, although it does not affect the nutrient quality or the pH of the mix. It does aid in drainage and in air and water retention. In fact, perlite is sometimes used in outdoor gardens to prevent sandy soil from leaching nutrients.
  • Vermiculite: Vermiculite particles are those silvery-gray flecks you see in potting soil. It’s a mica-type material that is heated up and expanded. This process increases the vermiculite’s water holding capacity so it can perform a very important function within the mix. Essentially, what happens within the mix is that the vermiculite particles will soak up water and nutrients, holding them, until the plants are ready to access them. It is important to note that Jiffy uses strict guidelines and quality control in the mining of vermiculite and all mixes are asbestos-free.
Through many years of experience and development, Jiffy has developed the right blend of all natural ingredients for mixes aiding in the growth of today’s common garden plants. Jiffy mixes contain only the highest quality of natural and organic ingredients.
With a better understanding of Jiffy’s top grade mixes, let’s discuss the potential pitfalls of using plain soil. There are two major drawbacks.
The first drawback is that you don’t know what other materials are contained within the soil. You may be exposing your seeds to disease spores, bacteria, plant eating insects, weed seeds and other undesirables. While your soil may be very effective outdoors it may perform poorly when in a self-contained environment. Several factors may contribute to the success of your soil in the garden, including natural predators and even weather events. These variables help to keep everything in balance and altering or eliminating them may help to cause poor results.
The second drawback is the lack of drainage for young seedlings. Garden soil tends to become very dense without consistent tilling, either by you, earthworms or other insects. The soil will start to compact after several waterings. This compaction is especially hard on the tender roots of young seedlings that are just starting to get established.
One of the greatest pleasures for vegetable gardeners is seeing something flourish that you have had complete control over, especially when it concerns ones food source. Growing vegetables from seeds requires a lot of patience, but it also requires a lot of nurturing and getting back to Mother Earth. Unlike buying produce from a store, in which consumers are completely blind to the location or manner of the food source, gardeners who grow the product themselves are involved in the process from start to finish. Picking the right growing media and knowing what is in that media allows for peace of mind that and gives you the best chance for success.

Encap: Lawn Repair Made Easy

outlook_e43c_bannerA lush, thick lawn not only adds visual and aesthetic appeal to your home, but it also offers a multitude of unseen benefits as well. A strong turf, with a deep root system, is nature’s best defense against invading weeds, fungus, and grub and insect damage. Cultivating a thick lawn is the best way to prevent unwanted pests and maintain a visually appealing lawn, and fall is the best time to achieve that lawn.

While many homeowners and lawn enthusiasts repair their lawns in the spring, mild temperatures, less competition with weeds, and dormant insects make fall the perfect time for seed establishment. Repairing your lawn in fall will give it the best chance at proper establishment and survival.
Lawn repair might conjure up images of back-breaking work and long days, but advanced lawn repair products from Encap® make fixing your lawn easier than it’s ever been. Whether you’re looking to repair bare spots, overseed a thin or damaged lawn, or start from scratch with a new lawn, Encap® carries the perfect product to help you create a beautiful lawn.

The Best Lawn Starts with the Best Mulch
You might think the key to successful lawn repair is in the quality of the seed, the blend of fertilizer, or the rate at which you spread it, and those are all important contributing factors. But one of the most important aspects to successful lawn repair is in using a quality seed-starting mulch.
Applying mulch along with the grass seed helps to protect the seed and prevent it from washing away. It also maintains close contact between the seed and the soil, a vital part of the germination process. Though there are many mulches to choose from, choosing a quality mulch will maximize results and help to ensure successful establishment.
Unlike any other mulch of its kind, Encap® Lawn Starter Mulch uses a patented Advanced Soil Technology (AST®) to hold seeds in contact with the soil, preventing them from washing away and promoting successful germination. Once seeds are established, AST® acts as a soil conditioner, creating micro-channels in the soil to allow roots to spread freely, fostering a sturdy, well-developed root system, and helping moisture to get down to the root zone where it’s needed most. Used by professionals for years on sports fields, golf courses, and commercial landscapes, this product has made its way into the retail market to help consumers achieve better results with their lawns. Usable with any type of seed, this mulch takes the guesswork out of watering with its patented Seed Watering TechnologyTM (SWT®), which sparkles when wet. When the sparkle is gone, you know it’s time to water again!
Figure 1: This chart compares Encap® Lawn Starter Mulch
with other commonly used mulches.

Over-Seeding, Bare Spots, or a Brand New Lawn

With the milder winter across the U.S., this year’s spring season has been a longer and particularly brilliant growing season, allowing for beautiful green lawns, blooming flowers, and lush vegetable gardens.

Residential vegetable gardens have seen a resurgence in the past few years, with more families enjoying the fresh crispness of home grown asparagus, artichokes, zucchini, yellow squash and bell peppers, to name a few.
